5 Easy Beginner Guitar Solos

Introduction

If you’ve been playing electric guitar for a few months (or longer) then chances are you want to learn lead guitar! However, it can be difficult to find easy, beginner-level solos – after all, solos are often the guitarist’s chance to show off their best and most impressive licks, which aren’t usually suited to beginners.

That’s why I’ve created this guide with five easy guitar solos for you to learn! The notes are nice and simple and should be easy enough for any beginner to get their fingers around. Once you’ve learned the notes you’ll be free to focus on the phrasing and feeling of the solo; arguably the most important part.

Note: If you want even more easy solos, check out my free guide of 47 Easy and Awesome Guitar Solos for Beginners here! It’s got a load of songs from Guns N’ Roses, Oasis, The Beatles and more. I’ve also included a load of great tips on how to learn the solos more easily, and how to master any trickier parts that you’re struggling with.

Californication (Red Hot Chilli Peppers)

The first solo on our list is a really simple and great-sounding one. If you’re new to lead guitar then this would be an ideal start to soloing; take it one little piece at a time and soon you’ll be playing it with ease.

Wonderful Tonight (Eric Clapton)

This is a slow, emotional solo from guitar legend Eric Clapton. This is a great opportunity for you to practice your bending technique.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps (The Beatles)

A superb song here written by The Beatles, with Eric Clapton on lead guitar. The Beatles are considered to be some of the greatest songwriters ever; the solos are good ones for beginners because they always suit the song well.

Sweet Child O' Mine (Guns N' Roses)

Although the ending solo in this song is of an intermediate level, beginners should be able to learn the guitar part at 1.15 in the song. In typical Slash style it takes a simple idea and uses creative phrasing and bends to make it sound great.

High and Dry (Radiohead)

When you play this song make sure to let the high E string ring out clearly; do that and it’ll sound great. This solo is a superb example of how you don’t need to do anything complex to play something that sounds good.

Amazing tips TomGuitar, really useful tabs you have here, and I appreciate that. Californiacation`s solo was the first one I have ever learned. Is there a chance you can write a similar article regarding to easy guitar riffs of popular songs? Thanks

Great work on this. Most lessons these days are geared towards intermediate players and we need more lessons for beginners. We were all beginners at some point. Bravo!

Good work Tom and thanks for the guide. I'm downloading it just now, I hope to get more lessons from you soon!

A quick question, what guitar solos do you think are the best to develop a nice technique? I mean, which players o which style works best for you?
I always liked Led Zeppelin ones, because they are fast and quite easy, for an intermediate player, but maybe you can suggest some more for us to practice.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Glad you like the article!

For good technique, its all about choosing solos just on the edge of your ability level. Choose something that's exciting, but not something too advanced.

It really is different for every person, and for every ability level. Choose solos that aren't too easy (you won't improve) or too hard (you might lose interest before you get progress) and you'll develop well.

This is a skill in itself, really! Have a play around with lots of different solos from a variety of artists and learn solos which aren't too far out of your ability level but still offer you a nice challenge.
