As I am Russian myself, I'd love to share Ivan Smirnov with you. Ivan Smirnov is a true acoustic guitar virtuoso with exceptional sound and tone. I've been on his concerts few times and sometimes shared the same stage with him and  his band. Check out those two pieces:

"Long lake", a meditative piece:

"Buddy", a very Russian piece. You can see his son playing keyboards on this one:

And my absolute favourite, "Land where the sun sleeps", a footage from St. Petersburg TV program. His son Mikhail Smirnov is also here, playing keys. On flutes, you can hear Sergei Klevenski, one of the best Russian ethnic flute players, check his solo on 2:19:

Tell me what you think of him.

BTW, what about the other musicians? Are they part of his band too?

They are part of his band as well as successful soloists and other band's members (yes things are complicated there in Moscow :). Klepa (Klevenski) is an acclaimed Russian folk flutist and welcome guest in almost any interesting ethic band, especially in studio sessions. His style is instantly recognizable. Mikhail Smirnov is a leader of Moscow folk bands such as Art Ceilidh, we shared stage few times.

Great that you liked Smirnov.

Hi,

"Long lake" from Ivan Smirnov has very interesting acoustic. What kind of wired plug in on his guitar is he using. I see that he uses Takamine but with special plugged in? It sounds really well.

Very impressive indeed, I love the feeling this song transmits. You say "things are complicated here in Moscow". Do you mean is it difficult for Russian performers to get credit and importance for their job? If that is the case, it is the same it happens in Spain. Apart from mainstream fashion music, "cultivated" music doesn't get much attention here... in fact there was much more music culture during the nineties, with the bands and soloists coming from USA, than there is now.

Sad but true, we are walking backwards!

It's all true.

But actually by "complicated" I mean that following band lineups in Moscow is complicated because everyone plays with everyone and you can see the same people in many bands :)

Ivan Smirnov is a legendary old guitarist in Russia, Moscow. His sound and attitude to melodies and improvisation is unique. He played a lot in many side projects, as studio musician e.t.c.
