Sound:
I play a lot of different stuff. Mostly leaning towards rock and metal. But also incorporating other styles in. That's where the HSS setup really shines. I can go from rock and metal to just about anything. I played with the guitar stock for quite a while before I changed it. The stock bridge humbucker wasn't bad by any means. Simply not for me. It was somewhat loose sounding in the lower frequencies. Kind of sounded muddy when I used overdrive. It just didn't say defined enough. The treble sound I got out of it was actually really good. It had a great solo tone, but I couldn't trade my low end for that. So I changed it out with a Seymour Duncan SH-11 Custom Custom. That pickup has a fairly light low end due to that Alnico II magnet. It cleaned up the low end nicely and it now stays defined and still has power. It also has that nice upper mid and treble sound I wanted.
The two single coils sound alright, but I think I'll be changing them out for maybe some Hot Rails. They don't sound like a Fender single at all. They've got the single coil type sound, but it's more low end oriented. I didn't expect them to sound anything like a Fender, but what else is there to compare it to? They do alright, but they just don't have the punch or tonal quality I'm looking for. I think that has to do with the basswood body too. I'll just have to find ones that work with that basswood. So I figure a Hot or Cool rails would give me more p
Action, Fit & Finish:
I'm 24 years late to tell you that one. I wasn't even born when this guitar was made.
As for how it's held up, it's still doing great. The finish is in great shape. The fretwire is worn down in spots, but that's not bad for it's age. It's seen some usage. The Edge trem is still working great too. Holds tune well. I tune it once ever two weeks or so and I play a lot. One of the tuning machines sticks a bit. But hey, it's 24 years old. And I only use it when I change strings.
There is only a bit of rust on the neck pickup height adjustment screws. The Edge trem is worn down in areas, but has no real pitting. Otherwise, it still is in great shape.
It's even fallen off a stand and had nothing happen to it. It's a tough guitar. So from what I've seen, it's great. But I'm also guessing the previous owner took care of it pretty well.
Reliability & Durability:
I'd trust this guitar live no problem, but playing live with no backup isn't smart. The guitar has held up for 24 years and is still going. So if I take care of it, it'll go even longer. There are no major issues at all. The finish still looks like it could be in the 80's. Strap buttons are big, but locks are a good idea.
Overall Impression:
I play a little bit of everything. To me, no one guitar can do it all. That's why I have a few around. It matches that 80's type sound I wanted to have. I can do the faster playing on this guitar and do some of the whammy tricks. It's exactly what I wanted. I've been playing about 13 years now. The only other working guitar I have is a Washburn X-50 Pro. If it were broken, lost, whatever I'd get another if I could fine one left handed. They aren't that common.
I really like the Edge trem and how well it holds tune. The thin neck is nice for longer stretches too. I really bought this by chance really. I just sold my SG to pay for my car repair and had extra left. This happened to be on Ebay right when I had the money. I hadn't seen many, so I got it. I'm happy with it as it is now, save for the pickups. Otherwise it's a good solid guitar. If you find one, they usually aren't expensive and are a really great buy.
