Welcome back for another lesson Axe Slingers! So I have showed you some basic barre chords and have expanded your horizons to include Major, Minor, Dominant and Diminished 7th chords. I am sure that these new chords are presenting you with two new problems: fretting them and soloing over them.
Remember that the chord fretting will come with time. The more you use the chords, the quicker your hands will strengthen and adapt. I recommend that you take your previous chord progressions and substitute one or two 7th chords. This will also allow you to become accustom to the sounds of these new chords without altering the sound of your chord progression too dramatically.
As for soloing over the new chords, remember that you can use the Major Pentatonic over Major and Dominant chords, and the Minor Pentatonic over Minor and Diminished chords. You will find that the Pentatonic scales will technically work over 7th chords, but you are missing a few notes. With this lesson I am going to introduce you to a few Arpeggios that can be used with the Major and Minor Pentatonic to help spell out chord changes.
Practice the following with strict Alternate Picking:

Remember that all of these arpeggios have their root notes on the bass strings. Be sure to practice arpeggios up and down the fretboard and change the keys to help you memorize the shapes. Also, be sure to mix up the notes when you are comfortable with the shapes. Finally, play a few notes from the Pentatonic Scale, and then play a few notes from an arpeggio. Be sure to mix and match! Now go forth and practice!
