Picking... Lot of guitarists think that the key to fast playing is the fast left hand. That’s a huge mistake, the cooperation of both hands is the way to speed. So, today’s lesson is going to make you a better string-skipper! That needs tons of cooperation, so development in both hands is guaranteed. Not much to talk about, there’s a lot of work waiting for you. So, pick up your guitar and have fun!

These string skipping exercises are very fun to play. Make your own permutations of them, and as always - work with a metronome, and start slowly. Don’t proceed until its clean and nice. The method can look like this :

  1. Set the metronome to 60BPM, and proceed with every exercise.
  2. After every 10-15 successful tries of an exercise, raise the BMP by 5.
  3. When you get to max speed, lower it by 20, raise again.
  4. In 99% you can do it faster than before.
  5. But if it’s not clean, slow down again.

Do this until you feel you progressed!

Exercise 1
E|-----------------------4----|--4-------------------------|
B|-----------------2----------|--------2-------------------|
G|-----------4--------3-------|-----3--------4-------------|
D|-----2--------1-------------|-----------1--------2-------|
A|--------3-------------------|-----------------3----------|
E|--1-------------------------|-----------------------1----|

That’s a easy one to start with. Watch out for unwanted string noise, mute them with your palm if it’s too hard for the beginning.

Exercise 2
E|-----------------------4----|--4-------------------------|
B|-----------4-----2----------|--------2-----4-------------|
G|-----2----------------------|--------------------2-------|
D|--------------------3-------|-----3----------------------|
A|--------3-----1-------------|-----------1-----3----------|
E|--1-------------------------|-----------------------1----|

Next version of the Exercise 1. It’s the same pattern, but the gap between fretted notes is now two strings.

 Exercise 3                             Exercise 4
E|-----2-----4--4-----2-------|----------------------------------------|
B|----------------------------|----------------------------------------|
G|----------------------------|-----------------------------1--2--3----|
D|----------------------------|-----------1--2--3----------------------|
A|----------------------------|----------------------------------------|
E|--1-----3--------3-----1----|--1--2--3-----------1--2--3-------------|

No. 3 is a one big awkward thing to play! Remember, that if its more weird and hard, the better is result

in skill. Number 4 is a very nice idea of making the skips wider and wider.

Exercise 4 (continued)

E|-----------------------------1--2--3----|
B|-----------1--2--3----------------------|
G|----------------------------------------|
D|----------------------------------------|
A|----------------------------------------|
E|--1--2--3-----------1--2--3-------------|

Exercise 5
E|-----------------3--3-------------------||
B|--------3--------------------3----------||
G|--------------2--------2----------------||
D|-----2--------------------------2-------||
A|-----------1--------------1-------------||
E|--1--------------------------------1----||

That’s one of my favorites. You can adjust the gap as in the exercise 1 if you want to make it harder.

Here, I prepared some riffs to practice skipping. Rhythm is up to you, but keep it steady.

Riff#1

E|--------------------------------------0-------------|----------|
B|--------------------3--------3--0--3----------------|----------|
G|--------2--------5----------------------------------|----------|
D|-----5-----------------5-----------------2--0--2----|--5-------|
A|-----------3--3-----------2-------------------------|--5-------|
E|--3-------------------------------------------------|--3-------|

Riff#2

Very melodic one, I like it. Nice skip within octaves.

E|----------------------------|----------------|
B|----------------------------|----------------|
G|-----------------12----14---|--12------------|
D|-----------10---------------|----------------|
A|--------------10----12------|----------------|
E|--0--12h8-------------------|----------------|

Riff#3

This one has got really awkward fingering, so watch out for slides!

E|--------------------------12s17---------|
B|-----------------5s-10-13---------------|
G|----------------------------------------|
D|--------2s-7--10------------------------|
A|----------------------------------------|
E|--5--8----------------------------------|

G|----------------------------------------||
D|-----------------10-7s-2----------------||
A|----------------------------------------||
E|--------------------------8--5----------||

String skipping is a technique that really helps to raise our control in both hands. Here are next set of string skipping exercises, this time they are based on A minor pentatonic scale.

E|--------------5--8----------|----------------------------|
B|----------------------------|--8--5----------------------|
G|--------------------7--5----|----------------------------|
D|--------5--7----------------|----------------------------|
A|----------------------------|--------5--7----------------|
E|--5--8----------------------|--------------8--5--8-------|

E|--------5--8--------------------------5-------------||
B|--------------------8--5-----------------8----------||
G|-----------------------------7--5-----------5-------||
D|-----7-----------5-----------------------------7----||
A|--------------------------5-------------------------||
E|--5-----------8--------------------5----------------||

Two next licks are very effective. Big jump and lots of coordination needed. Nice melodies, by the way. Mind the slides.

E||--------1--4--4--1--------------3--6--6--3----------|
B||----------------------------------------------------|
G||o-1--4--------------4--1s-3--6--------------6--3s---|
D||o---------------------------------------------------|
A||----------------------------------------------------|
E||----------------------------------------------------|

|--------7--11-11-7--------------9--12-12-9---------||-------||
|---------------------------------------------------||-------||
|--7--11-------------11-7s-9--12-------------12-9s-o||--1----||
|--------------------------------------------------o||-------||
|---------------------------------------------------||-------||
|---------------------------------------------------||-------||

This one is almost a final test.

E|----------------------------------------------------|

A|-----------3--------------3--1-----3----------------|
E|--1--2--3-----------------------------3--2--1--3----|

--1--2--3-----3--2--1--3--1--2--3-----3--2--1--3----|--8----||

And so, we came up to the end. That one is the hardest and if you can play that “skipper”, you can play almost any skip! First part is purely technical, second is melodic.
