What is palm muting? Well to do a palm mute you need to lay the palm of you picking hand across the strings, near the guitar's bridge. You have to play your picking hand right. If you place it very close, or on, the bridge, the sound will be the same, but if you place it too far a string won't ring out.
Let's try something simple first. Palm muting parts are marked whit . under the notes.

It might be hard to alternate pick the notes at first, but trust me, it's needed. So after you got this down right, let's try some different palm muting exercises.

Disturbed - Down with the Sickness intro (Drop C#/D tuning)

  |-D-U--D-U-D---D-U--D-U-D---D-U--D-U-|

Okay, it's time for something harder. In this next exercise you will only have to palm mute the lowest string. Try to bend your picking hand, so it won't lay on the strings fully.

Avenged Sevenfold - Unholy Confessions intro (Drop D tuning)

Yes it's pretty much down picked all the way. You can alternate pick at a few places but it's better this way.

Next time I will talk about the rhythm guitar playing.
