Hi!

In this lesson I will show you some finger picking patterns. You won't need a pick for this one, but you will need an acoustic guitar.

For those of you who know nothing about figerpicking, here are the basic information.

The 4th, 5th, 6th strings are plucked by your thumb(t), the 3rd string is plucked by your index(i) finger, the 2nd string is plucked by your middle(m) finger and the 1st string is plucked by you ring(r) finger.
If you have the bass note on the 6th string(eg. E,F,G) you pluck the 6th sting, if it's on the 5th(eg. A,B,C) you pluck the 5th, and if it's on the 4th(eg. D) you pluck the 4th string with your thumb.

Okay, let's get started with some picking in 4/4 timing.

4/4 Timing

e|---------0-------|
B|-----0-------0---|
G|---0---0---0---0-|
D|-----------------|
A|-----------------|
E|-0---------------|
-|-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-|
-|-T-I-M-I-R-I-M-I-|

Every note is an eight note here.

e|-------0-------0-|
B|-----0---0---0---|
G|---0-------0-----|
D|-----------------|
A|-----------------|
E|-0---------------|
-|-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-|
-|-T-I-M-R-M-I-M-R-|

This one is similar to the last one, but i find this a little more melancholic.

e|---------0-------|
B|---------0-------|
G|-----0-------0---|
D|-----------------|
A|-----------------|
E|-0---------------|
-|-Q---Q---Q---Q---|
-|-T---I---MR--I---|

This one is a slower one, works well with slow songs. It might be tricky at first because you have to use two fingers when you pick.

e|-----------------|
B|-----0-------0---|
G|---0---0---0---0-|
D|-----------------|
A|-----------------|
E|-0-------0-------|
-|-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-E-|
-|-T-I-M-I-T-I-M-I-|

This is the first patter's first half two times. This is very useful when you have two chord in one bar.

2/4 Timing

For 2/4 timing you can do the 4/4 patterns just cut out the last part. For example:

e|---------|
B|-----0---|
G|---0---0-|
D|---------|
A|---------|
E|-0-------|
-|-E-E-E-E-|
-|-T-I-M-I-|

e|-------0-|
B|-----0---|
G|---0-----|
D|---------|
A|---------|
E|-0-------|
-|-E-E-E-E-|
-|-T-I-M-R-|

Ascending pattern.

e|-0-------|
B|---0-----|
G|-----0---|
D|---------|
A|---------|
E|-------0-|
-|-E-E-E-E-|
-|-R-M-I-T-|

Descending pattern.

3/4 Timing

For this, you can just cut one beat from the 4/4 timing, or add one beat to the 2/4 timing.

e|-------0-----|
B|-----0---0---|
G|---0-------0-|
D|-------------|
A|-------------|
E|-0-----------|
-|-E-E-E-E-E-E-|
-|-T-I-M-R-M-I-|

Oh yeah. Metallica's Nothing Else Matters intro is picked this way. Also this is one of the most used pattern for the 3/4 timing.

e|---------0---| B|---------0---| G|-----0-------| D|-------------| A|-------------| E|-0-----------| -|-Q---Q---Q---| -|-T---I---MR--|

Ascending pattern.

e|-0-----------|
B|-0-----------|
G|-----0-------|
D|-------------|
A|-------------|
E|---------0---|
-|-Q---Q---Q---|
-|-MR--I---T---|

Descending pattern.

I hope this helped you out. If you need any more picking patterns just be creative and make up for yourself. Make sure to practice with a metronome, it helps you a lot.
